Special Contributor Paul Rowley aka Eatfish…The dance of the surf perch

Note from the founder: Special Contributor Paul Rowley aka Eatfish is a true Allaroundangler and I am happy to have him share this change of pace with all of us. He whacks and stacks everything you can think of…Please welcome him back to the site! It’s been a while. I think you can find him whacking huge trib springers in June of 2008 if you archive this site. He is also featured in movies on my Youtube page with Magicsoul and I. He’s a river and Ocean angler and we’re lucky to have him around. Chris H3llcat Heller

Here’s something to chop up and make sexy for your blog. Just some bare bones bout the bounty in the surf. Fish taco time!

When the tuna water moves out, and the wind chop makes the big pond unfun it’s time to chase pogies in the surf.

Typically red tails are an open surf kind of fish, unlike their cousins the striped/barred/rubberlipped/rainbow pogies that inhabit the rocks.

Red tails also are typically a very tide dependent fish. An hour before or after slack tides is the best, with high being a bit more consistant than low tide.

Beaches are always changing and these fish roam in schools ripping up crustaceans that get uprooted from their sandy surroundings.

There are a few productive areas that I have found and can be very generous in restocking the taco department.

We fished two tides and watching people that don’t fish catch fish made it worthwhile. My friend David caught the largest perch I’ve ever seen.

He lost another pig of a perch right after, he was broke off and the perch did the tail walk through the swells trying to shake the hook.

A very simple type of fishing med/heavy steelhead rods, 15lb test, weight on bottom, looped hook, bait, find the fish and hang on…

Eatfish boys…it’s good for ya’

That sounds like a blast. Not sure it would work but I would love to try that on a fly rod. Got to love some fish tacos.

What coast are we talking here?

    Hey Meskel-

South Coast, very South, like Brookings. They can be found on a lot of the beaches up here. I’ve had luck on a few beaches near Newport, Barview, and even the jetties for the striped perch. By far the S. beaches are best and there are a few places where the outgoing pulls from a big plane and you can almost drift fish. On trips where I am there for several tides I have scrapped together shrimp like flies and had a blast, and when they are in a feeding frenzy they can be caught nearly at your feet.

I usually like to make spring trips or fairly early trips down to that particular beach and get out for some big lings and rocks. There’s also a decent chance for striped bass in the spring although I’ve never tied into one.

    eatfish boys!
