Fly Fishing for Steel

This special contribution is brought to you by none other than the angling idol of so many of us….THE SAL MONID! Enjoy his story about his trip out east the other day:

I’ve always wanted to do a winter trip to go for summer steelhead on the fly. I hooked up with Brandon Bischof and Steve “Lanoman” Lanigan to give it a shot. It was a freezing fog day that kept most of the other anglers at home. The water was low but we were still up for a 10 mile float. The water temp was 37 chilly degrees and I was going to roll fishing with floating line and a weighted fly. I was enjoying the beautiful country as we fished the first run. On my last cast I hooked up and had a super battle from a gorgeous 6 lb steelhead…still bright but with some pink starting to show on the flanks. This was a wild fish and gave me 4-5 solid runs before coming to shore.

Steve hooked up a couple of times and had one almost to the bank before it came off. The second one was a big fish that threw the fly on a major league jump right at the start. Near the end of the float we were fishing a hot-looking run and I went through it with no luck. I tried my luck down stream and blanked there as well. I decided to try the initial water again. It looked fishy and worth another shot. As luck would have it, I ended up bagging two more fish. I am glad I followed my instincts. They were both gorgeous fish and excellent fighters!!

It was a great day on the water. In addition to some fine fishing, we saw a bunch of big horn sheep and a couple of bald eagles. I will definitely be back.
