I’ve been running some searches into all my different hard drives and I’m finding some cool pics gone unnoticed. Anyhow, thinking about throwing up some ‘Action photos of the day’ once in a while. Maybe I’ll make a special DVD for the action photo that gets the most stars. 1-5.

*I will also be preparing a full length Allaroundangler DVD. You see, the Youtube hosted movies we have ran for so many years are a ten minute maximum. Hence the compilations of shorter movies onto a single DVD.

This being said, Sal has encouraged me to put a story to a full length. I’m not so sure about that but he has got me to thinking about something different for the full-length. Stay tuned for more on that.

*I’m currently accepting Blooper material in the form of pictures or video clips. Even stories can be worked in to upcoming bloopers….how you ask?? You’ll see soon…

Sal shows river and method diversity…finds success

Words/pics from the angler…

“After a day in the field looking at the river and opportunities to restore the habitat in cetain areas, we realized we had 2-3 hours of time that we could use for some angling.

Russ and Mark, two local experts took us on about a 20 minute hike which ended at a beautiful run. They noted that the water levels were similar to early June.

There was a tiny bit of color in the water. Two of us used gear and Mark and Russ were fly fishing. They gave us the best spots for fishing. After fishing for awhile with a black and picnk Aero jig I decided to switch to flouro carbon leader.

After the switch the bobber made a dive on the first cast. It turned a nice 10-12 lb native which I self released trying to pick up the fish for a photo. We moved to another amazing run as the light was fading but were not able to find any more action.

My thanks to Russ and Mark for introducing me to this river system and sharing some amazing steelehad water.”

In the last two days several people have gotten out on these low waters to stalk steel. Enough good sticks have been in the water for me to know that without a considerable push of rain before mid-month….yikes, anyway.

Today MME, Magic and myself put enough ground under our feet for two or three days worth of fishing. None the less we had a fantastic time in what seemed like January weather with the flows of May. Really weird.

SAL, HOWEVER, banged his second ten pound plus wild steelhead in a row on his new favorite float and jig combo. Between him and The Brick and myself…our last 5-8 bobber fish have come on this jig. Anyhow, this was a new river for Sal to fish and he was a guest of some of the locals….who HE outfished. Yeah, that’s my pops.

Late season steel opportunities

Most of the seasoned & successful steelhead anglers you will talk to will tell you the same thing when it comes to their favorite time of the season to fish. Guaranteed, 7 out of 10 people will tell you it’s late in the season. Those 7 out of 10 anglers who answered that March and April are their favorite months of the year to have a decent shot at a trophy 20# steelhead. Many of our rivers in the region have seasons that end earlier than any of us would like. Alas the runs are most definitely better off because of it.

In the case of those of you fishing rivers that will remain open the whole way through the run….you will find less and less people on the water as hatchery fish almost completely dissipate from the catch reports or field reports. For those of us who cannot get enough steelheading no matter how hard we try….this is our time to prosper amongst these high probability stats in our searches for The Big One.

These late season opportunities include covering a lot of water and continuing to move…while fishing each target area thoroughly but without abuse. After all, you may want to come back to it later in the day. Personally, this year as the water remains below our annual median levels….I find that drifting a very short ’stockton-style’ leader (thanks Jake) works really well and doesn’t require any extra floatation…..yarn being optional but not necessary with good bait.

Shrimp tails and small baits of cured roe, Reardon-style, again being a hot producer for many of us in these late season trips about. If you’re running float and jig rigs, prepare to run your float very short…and fish your target area from well above the location to wish to fish. Being quiet along the river is also extremely important during these low flows. To be fairly ‘ninja-like’ is going to help your hook-up efforts tremendously. Thanks to the Brick for schooling me on that.

The late season steelhead opportunities continue through April in many rivers. There will even be a cross-over period where it’s not out of the question to hook a spring king. Especially on bait rigs. I will have some new trips to share soon. Won’t you? Email me a story or a report with or without pictures, anytime. As always, I’ll remove any river or location names.
