Change up for the switch over??
April 16th, 2010

With many previously closed rivers opening back up to angling….other closing to certain fisheries……and many other rivers in addition hosting runs of both winter and summer steelhead…..how do you plan to fish the rivers during this ’switch-over’ time??
In the past years….its seems I’ve mixed in a good amount of sturgeon and trout by the time the end of April rolls around. Usually, I seem to take a bit of a break from the steel this time of year….beyond the few spring chinook trips I’ve done in the Big River.
But this year and last year have been different. I seem to be focusing exclusively on steelhead and all the rivers we have access to that hosts them. Can you blame me?
You’ve read this blog for a third of this new year or more. The contributors to this website have landed more steelhead to the bank in the last 4 months than any other 4 month stretch in the 5 years this blog has been in existence. That bodes well for the state of steel affairs.
As I plan for my next trip out out on a river near you….I find myself wondering what my fellow contributors or readers are planning on doing as a primary method moving into this summer steelhead season of 2010. For example, I know Meskel will be flyfishing. There are certain things….like rain and fire…that are just a given.
This being said, I am pondering going to a shrunk-down version of methods from what I have ran all year for winters….i.e.; 1/16 & 1/32 oz jigs under a small fixed float…or a smaller version of the J Money yarnies and some equally smaller baits of eggs as I am sitting on some KILLER cured roe bites.
Who has some practical methodology to share with the rest of us about what has worked for you, method-wise, this time of year in seasons past? I’m stoked to pump this thread up. It’s not only time for salmon…..it’s always time for steelhead too.

I looove my steel…….(from 2 wks ago)
