Fish ‘em if you got ‘em…
March 11th, 2010
And just when we could almost not stand another questful hike along an unseasonally skinny & dry river……the rain it does save.
A couple of the rivers I fish have more than quarupled in flow in the last 12 hours. We can all say, thankfully, goodbye for now to extrememly low water levels in our steelhead tribs. Everything around is swolen, swelling or about to be swole. That’s real great news for us late season steelheader die hards.
I mentioned big fish in an earlier post. I talked about large percentage of late season fish and their size compared to an average year in, year out fish. Then we all got excited….went out to our favorite river….and fished late summer type water conditions. Enough to make a winter steelhead fisherman get down right depressed. Two of my 4 skunked trips this season have come in the last ten days.
Nothing like a day-long soak and a whole change in perspective to bring some new late run fish to the front of the mind. Some of these late local fish are wild and some are a later return brood stock. Either way, we should have a nice last push at just the right time.
My perscription for Sunday through Tuesday(ish)…: Fish ‘em if you got ‘em. Take tomorrow to prepare and let those rivers start to drop…may be fishing some places by mid-afternoon….best bets for attracting that BIG fish will be drifting bait with lots of color, big gawdy pink plastics or according to Guide Josh Leach this is the time to fish hardware. Don’t forget he’s turned half a dozen anglers onto spoon fish this year…..
Lastly, please send me in a picture or two and a report of your trip out. Get your pick up here on Allaroundangler today.
