Water on the rise? No problem.

February 27th, 2010

I had the pleasure of fishing with The Brick and BIG Jake Reardon yesterday in a full day-long hunt for winter heads of metal. First thing yesterday morning I checked the USGS river level report and selected the locations of the rivers we intended to visit.

I discovered that all of the rivers were on a bit of a rise after a full night of rain. And by ‘bit of a rise’ I mean a full spike in the graph. With not enough time, nor any desire, to cancel the trip….we met up and set out to fish rising waters.

Although we only landed 25% of our hook up ratio…. each one of us hooked fish. We did so with the odds against us. The rain agaist the side of our heads all day too. Three of these fished were taken on drift…all bait…and one on float: Jig with bait.

I have some fantastic video from this day to be included in the February Steelhead Wrap Up 2, but for now check out the 25% landed. Real sic no doubt. One of the most beautiful fish I’ve seen all season.

Keep in mind as you look at these pics that Jake is 6 foot 5. That fish is real Toadie.

A ‘Bear’ of a day….Feb 26th Report

February 27th, 2010

By Kevin Hunting

I got this one, and had three more on the line. One of those three was the first springer to speak of in this river. Holy crap did it take line. The last I saw of it, it was headed back to sea at a phenomenal rate. Got a good peek at it, and ‘huge’ is the term I would use.

I did hit two more steelhead on shrimp (The Brick’s recipe) after that and one of those was a pig. Had five minutes of fun with that fish. The last one was only a couple head shakes and a jump. It was a day of go to baits though, the ol’pinky was a twofer, and the shrimp was a twofer. Say hello to my favorite two baits.

The hen I landed this morning was stapled with an owner top and bottom so she was done from the bite. She will taste good and feed my family and the neighbors. She gave up 1.5 pounds of row and 7 pounds of fillets.

Well thats the report from my end, let me know how your end went. Oh yeah, and it was a rainy bitch today, Hope yours was drier.

Results from tournament

February 27th, 2010

By Bob Didier

wildflipper.jpg

A tough 1st tournament as usual in Feburary.  Finished 5th out of 9 teams.  Caught 6 out of our teams 7 fish caught.  4 of which we could weigh due to the lakes regulations.  All four fish just happened to be fish I caught.  Rough day for my partner.  Our final weight was 9lbs even.  1st place had a little over 13lbs.

We just couldn’t find any big fish that wanted to bite.  I did catch a nice 3 lb 5oz fish though, which was our biggest fish.  Caught 3 of my 6 fish with my Die Hard Custom Baits “wild flipperz” (beaver) in the picture, but the color that was hot was a little more green with purple flake.

Anyway, next month should be warmer and the fish will be up shallow spawning or getting ready too and hopefully bite a little better.

What’s on deck??

Fish on a deck. Duh.

LOTS of more steelheading content to come! I’ll be airing a February Wrap Up movie with new footage from many of our new and old members of Team Salmon……..including drift AND float-caught fish…as well as ‘bobber’s down’ on film! A first in five years for me to get a ‘bobber down’ clip and I came a nose hair away from getting two of them in one day. Got the hook set on one…bobber down on the other. Thanks in advance to The Brick for both of these…..your streak of hooked fish is alive and long running. Congrats.

You’ll also see one of the prettiest steelhead you will see all season. BIG Jake with this well earned claim to fame. But you really have to see this fish to appreciate it. It was tremendously hard-earned.

I hope you come back soon and plan on spending a while because there’s more I haven’t mentioned….like Bear does it again too!! So send in your stories and photos today!

Check back daily for new pictures, movies, clips and more……H3llcat

These first ones are better shots but they just do not show the size of the fish. If you do decide to put some of these pics up would you put a thanks to Jason from Bend for taking the pics for me please.

These pics below were taken a couple hours after I caught the fish. Though this fish looks pretty beat up and the pics just don’t do it justice it is the largest hatchery fish I’ve caught to date in my steelheading career.

It took a jig on 8 lb test and it took me a good 15-18 minutes to bring it in. This buck was only 33 inches long but it was about 18 inches around and wieghed a solid 15 lbs. It was still had full sperm sacs and ended up cutting pretty nice I thought it was a smoker for sure but it was a nice dark pink-red firm meat.

Prefishing for 1st tourney of the year

February 26th, 2010

bobby-d-feb.jpg

What’s up everyone here at allaroundangler.com!  It’s time for the 2010 Southern Utah Bass Anglers (SUBA) season to kick off tomorrow.  I’ve been in the lab making new baits for this season and doing a little winter prefishing here and there.  It’s been so tough out there for me, but there are some big fish already caught this year out at our local reservoir, Sand Hollow.  I’ve seen and heard of fish in the 6-7 pound range.  Man, I’d love to get one of those tomorrow!

I went out today to do some prefishing with a buddy of mine, and the water dropped a few degrees since last week and it’s right around 46 degrees.  That’s damn cold for bass fishing!  We fished for a little over 3 hours and only had 3 bites and one fish landed.  Caught this nice 2lb 5oz beauty on one of my Die Hard Custom Baits.   Nothing better than catching fish on your own baits.

Tomorrow is gonna get nasty with rain in the forcast, so hopefully that will make the fish bite a little more.  I gotta defend my Angler of the Year title, and I know a few guys are gunning for me…haha.  My goal this year is to get more wins, and maybe a Big Fish Award somewhere along the line.  I’ll report back with the results after tomorrow.

Wish me luck!  Take care, and tight lines!!!

For now, since I am backed up with content on deck….I will just show you a glimpse of my day with the Brick yesterday. Brennan Ingrim is one of the fishiest people I’ve ever met.
