Bear continues to stack his steelhead stat sheet with yet another fish to the bank. He’s gotta be close to double digits in as many days.

Upon Sal urging him to get a photo of one of these wild SH…..here you have it. What a gorgeous fish. I won’t be able to sleep.

Here’s the photo and the ‘words from the angler’……….

Our No Cal steelhead connection and much more……

October 30th, 2009

Please enjoy this unexpected submission to my website from an old friend, fishing partner and the truest, most skilled angler I’ve ever met. This is his contributing Bio…..and much more.

Tailout Swinger fishing a Pac NW run in teens temps

My name is Tim Cecy,A.K.A. Tailout Swinger. I have been addicted to fishing since age 4. My early years were spent bass fishing in Northern California which evolved into steelhead and just about anything that swims.

I caught my first steelhead when I was 7 on the banks of the Trinity river. That first fish was quickly turned into a limit and something in me was triggered.

Sadly, I have been preoccupied with the devil of steel ever since. I moved to Oregon in my early twenties and was fortunate enough to find a great group of friends who were hardcore junkies like I was. Some of my best memories of you guys are the late nights of slinky tying, leader wrapping, and talking strategy for the next days assault. Only to show up hungover and tired. We always caught fish, somedays more than others, but the time we spent is sorely missed.

Swinger, Sal, H3llcat (me) & H2O

I moved back to Santa Cruz after three years of battling the rain and long winters. I took a job as a deckhand on commercial and sports boats that fished out of Monterey bay. Catching and teaching people how to catch Salmon, Halibut, rockcod, and Albies gave me seven years experience on the ocean, which has made me a better river fisherman.

Five years ago I evolved into a flyfisherman, and cannot put the long stick down. Over the last four years I have been lucky enough to travel the west fishing as many different rivers as I can. My steelhead background has not allowed me to be content with the twelve and fourteen inch trout that reside, I want the big boys.

I usually fish down and dirty on sinking lines and large sculpin and crawfish patters that I tie. I am looking for one grab a day, if I connect great, if I miss, my fault. But the result can be rainbows and browns that would put any coastal steelhead to the test.

I feel I have been blessed with the best life a fisherman could ever ask for:

1) a wife who understands fishing is not a hobby it is a lifestyle

2) my best friends live in some of the best steelhead country in the world

3) my wife’s family all live in Montana

4) my job as a HighSchool teacher allows flexible time to chase fish all summer, one month in December.

5) people scattered throughout my life that have taught me that fishermen make the best friends..

Cold day in Bass land.

October 30th, 2009

It’s been a long time since my last report.  Sorry for the big time slacking.  This was the first time my boat has hit the water since early July.  It was just too hot for a while, but now it’s suddenly cold as a witches you know what!

Anyway, we only had about 3 hours to fish, but we didn’t do too bad.  The water has dropped from the 70’s to 50’s in a matter of a few weeks, so we concentrated in the deeper waters.

We didn’t find the 4-5 pounders we were looking for, but did catch a few in the 12-15 inch range.  6 fish total in the 3 hours with worms and jigs and one swimbait bite.  Hopefully next time I can find the bigger ones.

..here’s bear with a gorgeous king from late september….

This is long overdue really. Bear is one of our most recent contributors and commentors and is a successful angler newer to the game. He goes out and hooks 6 fish in two days. A combination of salmon and steelhead. EZ Eggs has been his hot ticket but if Matt and Joe over there don’t send me another care package we’re going to stop talking about them real soon. Just kidding guys. Anyway, my hat goes off to Bear…..and I’m off to order his very own Team Salmon Flex Fit ball cap right now. But first, his report from the last few days…..

Words from the angler…..

“Well its been a challenge to get to the hole lately, school, work, life. Well today I got out and the water was a little lower than I
would like but the hole was full of fish. I mean full, you could see the Ho’s and Nooks all over the place. You know what that means, gotta get low or get out there a ways. Well I went the latter to a line I know produces only to find a new snag in the middle of it. An adjustment later and I was in it, slammed a steel freight train that popped a leader mid air acrobatic. The line was good but I had to move for a bit to give the group hovering on the line a break and give other lines a chance. I went back down to the stand by line after a bit and this big ol nook takes the offering. By far not the brightest or non-deformed of the year but a 15 minute fight in the home current. 2 more steels took my offering of EZ Eggs and yarn by the time the night was upon me. A little guy of 17 who launched the most of any fish I have ever hooked and another large steely who made the dash
down stream to shrieking of the mono I just loaded. It’s always a good end to the work day with a nook and steely bite. Well till the next escape to the waters edge, tight lines…”

PrologueLet me first say that many of you within TS contribute regularly and this message is not for you. I am reaching out to new contributors. Whoever you may be. Close to home or no. Maybe you’re out of the area or maybe you’re just a beginner to angling. Any kind. Doesn’t matter. We want to hear from you. I recently received a comment from someone in Sunnyvale, CA….it’d be great to have your story on the water too! You never know when you might learn something new that you can apply to your own fisheries here or elsewhere.

I can’t even hardly stand to pick up fishing magazines in the store anymore. The latest fishing rag at the closest Fred Meyer has become more boring that the carp fishing Sal used to take me to do to avoid the salmon crowds. I’m just saying. They’re just not dynamic enough. The tutorial stuff is frozen berries at best and the stories seem to always include the same basic cast of characters doing the same stuff they’re always doing. I read articles…..change that; I ’start’ to read articles in the usual suspects and man….they are usually nothing but snoozers. Seriously, “could you bring me a coffee with that magazine?”

Am I generalizing here or are we in need of something great here in the Pac NW to shake things up? You can contribute right here on Allaroundangler.com and become an instant contributor to a DYNAMIC angling resource. Send us a story with a picture or video. Mail us a cd. Anything works. You can even send us your YouTube links. We’ll put you up on line as an Allaroundangler contributor. “Out of area” even if necessary. Now what magazine is going to offer you that? They can’t. Wouldn’t it be better to participate?

I know there’s lots of readers out there who have stuff to share. You just don’t think it’s good enough. Trust me. One little contribution gets things going. I’ve got some people reading across the Seas that owe me a story and some pictures too. I know you guys like following TS, but I’m sure TS could learn a little something from you too, yeah? And, there’s also plenty of you in TS that would qualify for this ‘first post’ offer.

Have fishing magazines been replaced by on line resources? Want to read an article on steelhead fishing? Google it. Since when do you still drive down to the mag rack and buy the latest magazine that’s already over a month old when it’s brand new? And these guys aren’t giving me much incentive to read anymore. There’s just no personality or momentum.

Let’s make Allaroundangler even better with more variety. Share something today. Email it to ‘info@allaroundangler.com with a note or story.

**SPECAIL NOTE: If you have NEVER contributed before and you send in a story with pictures….you’ll be put into a drawing for the end of the year for Team Salmon & Allaroundangler apparel. If you have already contributed….feel free to continue to do so. Small stories or fish reports encouraged but remember all river names and locations will be removed from the content. Site rule.

The Allaroundangler word for the day: Vicarious.

Director’s Commentary

October 26th, 2009

As I evolve as a blogger and as a fisherman that likes to entertain and teach…..I find new things that might be fun for some people…maybe not so fun for others. But, I have to try everything. Everything I can with current resources of course. So it’s a challenge to make the movies look different from one another sometimes.

That’s why when I found an old microphone and realized it plugged right into my PC software….I made a director’s commentary of my two favorite videos from 2009 steelhead season.

Both of these clips have mid to upper teen lb steelhead in them. Enjoy folks.

Allaroundangler.com. Your all in one, on line, river angling resource.

‘Ho fishing in Oregon almost over….

October 26th, 2009

With two days of rain upon us the local rivers are ‘hopping’ today. Not jumping. That will happen Thursday night….according to NOAA. No, with the Coho season closing in Oregon at the end of the month the next two days will be your only remaining chances to bag a silver salmon.

With rivers subsiding only for Tuesday and Wednesday our season will end with rivers on the rise and minds looking towards places like the Oregon coast…and well…the…Oregon coast. I know we’re all ready for that.

Anyhow, if you haven’t got a silver yet this year, the next two days are your best and only shots. For those of you out there like me who love this time of year and hiking long distances for salmon through the woods……get your fix and then head to the coast. popular rivers down there will be hitting 5-6 foot levels by this weekend.

There’ve been some great Coho caught this year. I’ll recap the season next week.

Search Questions…

October 26th, 2009

I’ve got a few emails of new viewers/readers who haven’t been able to find something when they have gone back later to view it.

Has this ever happened to you? Did you know that I enter, on average, 1 new post a day? That can really pile up especially when the trips get thick with action and lots of different anglers.

You have two options: 1) You can scroll all the way to the end of the page and then click the ‘previous entries’ hyperlink which will take you to the previous ten or so. And so on and so forth.

2) Instead, you may enter some text from the post (preferably you remember the title or a word in in it) in the search box in the top left corner. This function is slick and finds almost anything. You can also search by website names for anglers that you enjoy watching.

Biographies Link~Our readers deserve to know….

October 26th, 2009

I’d like to thank Kevin Hunting aka Bear for sending in a simple little bio about himself.

This isn’t rocket science or even basic algebra guys. Send a sentence or two in. And how about this…if you don’t send something in….I will write something up for you. Then; I get to choose the picture and I get to write whatever I want. Think about it.

There’s about 16 more of ya out there in TS sittin’ on your thumbs. Come on and bring it. You all have contributed to the success of this blog and without you our readers would not have stories to follow, relish and learn from. Let’s give them some background. Preferably of your choosing.

I know there were more contributor bios up on our old platform that were lost in the transfer to WP. If you have your old one you can resubmit. Or, check out Bear’s bio. Two sentences. Easy and clean. That’s not a bad king he’s holding either.

Thanks Bear.

Silvers submit to H2O….

October 24th, 2009

Rolling up to the rendezvous spot 33 minutes late…I was met by two of the most friendly faces on ts. Big Burge and H2O. They weren’t bugged at all that I was running so late…and in fact looked at it as a way to get caught up. It’s a first time for them fishing together as well to my knowledge. I was stoked. And fish or no fish, I was among people I would fish with in a heartbeat any day of the week.

This was BB’s second run to the ts property and h2o’s first in a long time. Maybe over a year. Not sure. Anyhow…..from the hill above the creek we spied the water to be a ‘tea-brown’ reminiscent of coastal tribs we fish this time of year. Something about the acidity in the leaves on the ground and that first rain turning the water into this cool color.

We were on a tight leash for time and only had the am hours to make something happen. Problem is, although the rains we had were enough to bring some fresh fish up river, it wasn’t enough to relieve their TMJ.

Hmmm. Odd conditions? Low flows making the drifts tough? No problem. Call SuperJosh to fix you up. It’s easy: Walk SuperJosh to a hole or run. Tell him what you know about the drift, if anything. H2O works hard until he figures his grind. Today that grind was pinky-nail size hollow core tossed on a spinning outfit. Imagine that. Oh yeah, and again the EZ Eggs save the day. I hope you are reading this Matt and Joe of NW Guide Baits. We need another ‘package’. :-)

H2O was able to go 2 for 5 today…..with two fish lost at his feet because BB and I were across the river and could not assist in the landing. Brutal losses. But he was able to reclaim the lost fish quickly with a limit of silvers in what seemed like ten minutes. I do believe he caught a fish and on the next cast hooked another. He was groovy today while Burge and I only lost a couple. All of H’s fish were hooked on a spinning rod which was key for the high lift with almost no lead on.

For the first time….I rolled out without the Olympus. Some pics were shot on Big Burge’s media….and we’ll try to get those up. A good one of JT about to leave the hole with his limit on a stick. H2O is fishier than a sushi kitchen. Tips.
