A devil and an angel..

September 29th, 2009

first-silver-of-the-year-09-webpage.JPG
The devil wins but pays out small…

So I feel like I have been sitting around with a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other.

The devil is saying “go to the river man….go to that spot with so many fish in it…they’re probably all fresh and chrome…..forget all the people just do it..GO GO”.

While the angel is saying “Don’t go down to that killing ground and battle with those people because you know you will (and I did today) so go fish somewhere else. Take Big Burge elsewhere.”

Well, guess where Big Burge and I went? This same spot the devil was lobbying for. And it was what it’s always been and will always be. I’ve got some hilarious stories from today. Big Tone, these stories would have you crying. From Russians crossing rivers in slacks to me calling a guy over to the river bank…it’s always something.

Enjoy this little ditty from the devil’s playground.

Hey, a big holler must go out to Big Burge who had never drift fished before….let alone walked into a combat bankie stronghold… I have to say it was really friggin cool to watch him hook into just a TOAD of a fair-hooked silver that leaped clear out of the water for the whole bank to see! I saw him hook and fight it from down river so I happened to be watching when this thing sounded like a torpedo on two steep of a line. Turned and spit. What a pig though. Nice work, Pete. You’ve now ‘hooked’ a coho…now we need you to land one so you will have completed the Big 7…all this year. Basically, landing a coho is the only thing BB hasn’t done yet. Helluva a start-up season. I don’t think we can even call it that now.

Low water Septembers..

September 28th, 2009

Here’s a classic Nookslayer video of him fighting a fresh chinook salmon in the lower river of one of our local CR tribs. I’ll post it in two parts. This has to be 2004 or 2005 and he pulled this fish out of nowhere. It was amazing. There wasn’t even any water! Kind of like now. Enjoy.

Where are you going to spend the rest of your dry September doing??

A cabin nestled in the Wind River Range, Wyoming……Part 1

September 27th, 2009

A deer has breakfast out the back door of our family cabin on the hillside

The Wind River Range………………………………….and everything that dumps out of it down through the emerging high mountain timber line through the rocky debris and on into the willow tree-riddled flats and bogs where the rivers and streams that have been created through this process seem to meander aimlessly back and fourth acting as nothing but a host to life. Fish. Wildlife..mammals and birds alike. The Wind River Range in Wyoming is very, very spectacular.

Southwest of the range there are famous rivers meandering like this one..

And now Sal travels again. This time to our family cabin in the Wyoming mountains. It sits below the Wind River Range a mile atop Fremont Lake.

Heller-taken Fremont Lake shot…(we don’t poach photos here)

This glacial-fed lake promises crystal clear waters in the low forty degrees even in the late of summer like we have now. This lake is tough to fish because of that clarity. It has waters as deep as 630 plus feet, is one mile wide in most spots and is twelve miles long. It has German Brown trout, Rainbow trout and Mackinaw or Lake Trout. The biggest Mack in my lifetime…goes to …..um well, me. Actually Massman and myself took turns on that beast for fun. Then Shorty would fall into second place.

The ultimate trophy of the family held by my great Uncle Niff. Famous doctor to the affluent and celebrites of the time…and one helluva Mack troller. They didn’t have the downriggers I had back then. Much tougher. His would push 30 and is mounted on our family cabin wall.

I’ll try to dig those pictures up and scan them in and post them. That would be amazing. So we have Sal on yet another journey
fishing this river and others.

This spot is famous for moose, big trout, pebbled bottom meandering river banks…and thunder storms..I love it!

If you’re checking this from the little local library there…..let us know how the fishing is, Sal!

Uncle Allen in Alaska brings da thundah!

September 26th, 2009

Clearly I may have outdated myself. I’m not sure if the kids these days say “bring the thunder” or not. Well if they don’t they should. And what would you say for 39lbs of nickel? This fish was taken on a flatfish…that you can see it broke on the strike. Wow. You can also see from the awesome pics Auntie sent in that it’s the white meated chinook. These are very rare…and ‘no big tone’ that’s not cause the fish is dark….as you can see here. Seriously though the white meat kings….you hear people talk about them all the time….but you rarely actually see one. It’s basically like an albino nook. What a peeeg.

Tides push anglers up river

September 25th, 2009

With these incredibly below average tides in the middle and lower river….I am launching today above the tide. Stay tuned.

Updated 1:20PM……

I fished below the mouth of a local CR trib today…nada. Only saw three chinook and no coho caught for about 30 boats. Yikes.

Wenatchee River Salmon Festival

September 24th, 2009

I spent the weekend in Leavenworth Washington (about 20 miles East of Wenatchee) to participate in the 19th year of this festival which is a community celebration of the return of the summer Chinook salmon.

I flew to Wenatchee and was picked up by Cam Thomas the Forest fish guy and a dynamite angler. He pulled up in his new diesel half ton towing a 17 foot boat ready to go fishing. Twenty minutes later we had launched in the Columbia and ran 15 minutes upstream to his favorite area. He was nice enough to introduce me to jigging in carefully selected spots and in short order I said “I think I got one.” A few minutes later we boated a 7.5 pounder. I am saying that this is my kind of fishing. We worked hard and Cam lost a nice one and we landed a number of pike minnows. I finally hung another running about 6 pounds. After a couple more hours we headed back to the dock in total darkness and had the run back all to our selves.

The following day I drove up to Leavenworth. The Salmon Festival runs for 4 days with Thursday and Friday dedicated to teaching local school classes about rivers, fish, wildlife, Tribal customs and values and respecting the out-of- doors. More than 44 classes came through the numerous learning displays and hands on activities.

Saturday and Sunday are for the public. I cruised the area and got to talk to lots of the volunteers and take lots of pictures. Activities included a Salmon tent for story telling, a 60 foot long traveling aquarium for fish viewing, chalk art, Gyotaku (making fish prints from real fish), Tribal dancing and displays and a range of other activities including fly tying and casting, kayaking etc. More than 50 partners come together to make the event happen and the pride and energy are contagious.

Late in the afternoon I headed up into Tumwater Canyon where the Wenatchee cuts through some major mountains to see if I could find some holding salmon. They are still a couple of weeks away from spawning and like to hold in the many deep pools and runs. I finally located a bunch right off the road and spent the last hour of daylight marveling at these 20-40 pounders that had made the 500 mile trip to come home.

The Captain has been relieved of duty….

September 23rd, 2009

hell-lounge-webpage.jpg

Not to worry.

I haven’t been relieved of Captaining duties for Team Salmon and Allaroundangler.com.

No. Only for my day job.

You know, that one that pays all the bills? Or most of them, anyway.

Anyhow, I wanted to let all of you know who have odd fishing schedules, that I am available for weekday fishing right now. Let’s go hit the CR together. Cheers.
