The Fight To Remember

By the way…Zach nailed his first Salmon today…..and SAL NAILS HIS FIRST CR FISH in the nick of time!!
Recently motivated by a flurry of Salmon caught on my new 8′9″ glass rod….I was feeling pretty good about my chances this morning. I was planning on seeing some Silvers caught…and maybe a smaller King if we were lucky. Maybe a little slower than yesterday…but I was planning on some action. After all, this would’ve been Sal’s ninth trip out for CR Kings with no takes…..’would’ve been’…
I got my perfect Chinook today on a wobbler that a couple weeks ago Sal and I were trying to mimic some of Double D’s wobbler patterns…and the ones that had been working so well were all some kind of combination of gold and green. So, Sal bought a gold ‘Clancy’ and we were stoked out by H2O who had swooped us some green Mylar decorative tape…..so cool to get it organically. Fish and learn….or fish and get lucky. Either way, I fished and FOUGHT the fight of this CR season for me.
I saw the all glass Lammy going nuts in the rod holder out of the corner of my eye. With all the ocean-fresh, aggressive Silvers being caught in our money slot….I assumed I was going to be on top of a nice big Nate Coho….Not the case, as I found out very fast. I must have fought this fish for half a mile down river, and to the boat and again maybe ten times. No shit. Unbelievable fish and fight. I will never forget having my rod being pulled DOWN and UNDER the boat so hard that I had to balance myself on the gunnel of the boat with my cranking hand. This fish, along with so many others this wonderful season, have reminded me why I love the fall better than anything.
