BC Dreamin

September 10th, 2008

It was the second week in August and I headed North to visit my good friend, Mark Potyrala, and pursue some fishing and relaxation.  Mark is a guy that loves the water and the fish and is great to be with.  We were able to sample a good cross section of the angling available.  This ranged from river fly fishing for steelhead or coho, plunking for steelhead or coho and ocean fishing for coho, halibut and any thing else that would bite.  The weather was cool and cloudy and provided a great backdrop for fishing.  The attached picture shows the rainbow over the river.  Incidently I did pick up a coho in this spot.

The river fishing was good, not great with mainly steelhead and coho being caught–it was the tail end of the spring chinook season but there were alos sockeye and pinks in the river.  The coho were running 8-10 lbs and the steelies 12-14 lbs and all of them were chrome and had sea lice.  They were good fighters,  The attached picture shows Mark and I with one of these beauties.

Fishing in the salt produced decent numbers of coho but required a fair amount of work to get them.  On one day of halibut fishing, we limited on 15-30 lb halibut but got into some mongo ling cod.  Mark got one that was probably 60 inches long and probably close to 60 lbs.  I got one that  was probably 40-45 lbs.  We threw these two big females back to spawn.  We did lkeep 4 others that were in the 15-30lb class and the picture shows Chris Broster, our third member on the ocean day, holding one of these big guys.

As always the beauty of BC and the great folks who live and fish there, made it a fine trip.  I am already thinking of a next time.
