Opening Day Reports Here

September 2nd, 2008

If I knew opening day for Fall Chinook Salmon on the Columbia River would have yielded me a Baboon’s ass, I would have probably gone fly fishing with Meskel. He did get himself an opening day Silver. Um, not to mention my face today is looking as red as said Baboon ass. Any hat donations? Wait, I have over forty hats. Yeah, good I didn’t bring ANY! That overcast sky really sneaks up on you.

There were over 100 boats in our area of the river, and most likely not many more than the four fish taken we heard about….and one was a Steelyhead. It wasn’t all for not, however, as we got to witness one of the most amazing fish fights I’ve ever seen….and I’ve seen a bunch. Other than that heroic effort though….pretty grim. Funny thing is, 13,000 fish went over that day…..and as many the previous two days before as well. Reports from trusted sources up river suggest an equally unproductive day up high below the dam. As you’ll see below, there was some down river success….but all in all we are left to only wonder. Wonder HOW we could have that many fish in the system and this result. A wild and mysterious creature Salmon are indeed. All the conditions would have suggested the contrary. Water temp? Tide funkiness? Moon’s gravitational pull?? :-)

Two other reports from yesterday…..other than our 0 fer 5 rods and two boats report…..which is that Big Tone and his brother Jed were captained by Double D’s guide service (not really a guide but certainly good enough to be) got their opening day limits. I’ll go so far as to say that the Davenport family must have a Salmon Fish in their Family Crest. These people KILL salmon. Congrats to Tone with the big fish of the day at 23lbs. Jed and Double D also did Buoy Ten before the closure and took a coupla more. Wow. At least I got to drive my drift boat in the big river.
