Getting out

April 3rd, 2008

With only two months left till the first little Meskel arrives there is just enough time to squeeze in a weekend trip to the D. It might get a little chilly at night and it is definitely early for the Salmon Fly hatch still a couple new fathers and myself have already made plans to bust out the 4&5 weights and do an overnight float on the weekend of the 12th.

Tentatively Pine Tree to Macs is the stretch we will be hitting with an overnight stop at a secluded “camp” spot on the track side of the river about mid way down. We have fished this stretch before and it was a blast

The Hyde

is probably full

But if you want to float along side just let me know and I can pass on the details.

This should be a good time for Nook to learn us what he was recently taught about fishing the D. Either way it will be a great time on the water.

Conservation Group for Fishermen Like Us ~ CCA

April 3rd, 2008

I attended a meeting last night for the Coastal Conservation Association. Sal and I signed up for a meager annual membership fee of $25.00.

!! Please click anywhere on the text below to visit the official CCA website !!

Their mission: Solve the Gill Netting Fiasco that exists in the Columbia River Basin. This is no joke, you guys. I heard some of the most staggering statistics last night. Here’s a couple a facts that should, at the very least, encourage you to click on their link and visit.

1) 3 of the 5 Spring Chinook fisheries in the Willamette Basin are considered ‘non-viable’, otherwise known as ‘potentially extinct’…upon further examination of data yet to be rec’d. EXTINCT….3 of 5 guys! The ‘viable’ fisheries in this region are the Clack and the Santiam.

2) Gill Netter Fishermen (if you wanna call ‘em fishermen) pay 75$ annually, to harvest. Do I need to repeat that??!! Last time I checked, a fishing/hunting combo tag for a sportsman is just about the same price. WOW.

3) Gill Netter Fishermen are only monitored or ‘observed’ 3% of the time. Are you kidding me?

4) Number of patrol officers and boats available: 18 officers and 4 boats. TOTAL. There are close to 150 of these Gill Nett Fisherman in our Lower Columbia.

5) This is the most troubling of all….OUR OVERSIZED STURGEON STOCK IN THE COLUMBIA RIVER POOL (area directly below Bonneville Dam) HAS DECREASED BY 67%! That’s enough to make me puke. Literally. Those big Sturg need us to help.

Join CCA with me and Sal and we will all bond together to make changes. CCA needs more people not only for the Portland Chapter, but also from our younger demographic. I saw one guy there in his thirties like me. Maybe next time some of you will have joined. I haven’t been inspired to kick these Gill Netters in the ars like this since I was young and full of P & V. Let’s get ‘em guys.

Special Thanks to the CCA, in advance, for allowing me to add your resources to allaroundangler.com!
