Canneries lined the banks of the Columbia between The Dalles and the sea. Samuel Elmore, Ben Young, Frank Warren, and Frank Seufert were major players in the salmon canning business.
The trick was to move quickly when new technology gave advantage. Laborers caught the fish in traps, seine nets, set nets, and at fishwheels whose paddles scooping with the current pulled salmon, sturgeon, eels, and steelhead from the river and dumped them into fish boxes headed for a cannery.

Anglers showing up in droves for chinook fishery on Columbia

The spring chinook fishery on the Columbia River is attracting plenty of anglers. There were 900 boats and 103 bank anglers counted during a flyover Saturday.
Slightly more than half the boats were between the Hayden Island power lines and the Portland International Airport tower.
This year’s boat count is twice as many as the same time the past couple years. During the flight and creel sampling March 24, 2007, a total of 421 boats were counted from the Interstate 5 bridge downstream. There were 510 boats counted during the March 26, 2006 flight.

I took a Friday off and headed up the Columbia with two friends to try for a late winter or two on the Hood. There were a surprising number of dudes there. The water was high but clear and there had been 4-5 fish taken in the morning according to the early shift that was leaving as we arrived.
I started up top, and they did the long run below. I blanked and headed down. They had seen one taken but had no luck on flies. I was floating it and waited up top for one of the local campers to vacate his station at the lower end of the run.
He was lobbing corkies across the river and had no luck. When he finally stepped off the boulder, I slid in for a few casts. I decided to try the near half of the river as he had been throwing over it. On about the 5th cast down goes the bobber and I landed about a 6-7 pound native. The guy had not left and was giving me the “what the F___?” look. I told him I had gotten lucky. That was it for the day.
We even went down to the Power Station (now open) and walked up the river and fished a number of spots. The fly guys never connected. I was happy to have gotten one and to have enjoyed a nice day on the river instead of an OK day at the desk.

…………..From Tony Yesterday…….
I got a little fishin in with Double D this morning after work. We started at 7am and by 8:45am we were limited. Double D’s buddy Jeff with a 22lber, then Double D with 20lber, and then myself with 18lb chrome hen. All three fish were chromers, and all had sea lice. A total of 3 for 3. Double D had us on the perfect slot…..

Fairly Effective Predators…….
March 20th, 2008
Pretty hard to get mad at animals, but I’d have to say these pics are hard to argue against effective actions. I’d like my kid to see a Salmon. AND, since nobody is tearing down Bonneville anytime soon….

A Good Hunter Stakes Out His Position…..wow, now that’s a no brainer….

…And Then Strikes His Prey……….

….And Then Eats 8.1% of It’s Body Weight EACH DAY!
Sea Lions…….
eat an average of 8.1 percent of their body weight each day. That’s a lot of food! If a 100 pound human had to eat eight percent of his weight each day it would mean consuming about eight pounds of food.
….thoughts from the h3llcat…..
Sea Lions that have adapted to our rivers and dams are a huge threat to the continued survival of Salmon. We created it….but we must now regulate it.

I really can’t wait to learn how to effectively fish plugs like this Kid.
…..a nice little action photo……..

Dusty’s Pal, Jeff……He put down the fly rod and they nailed ‘em on plugs!

If you wanna know where Dusty is fishing…..Ask Dusty. You can ping him on the site as “LipRipper”.
…In other news this weekend…….
H2O and I had an awesome time with great weather on Sunday floating from Oxbow, down. We threw it all at ‘em, except plugs. Hmmm, maybe we should have pulled plugs? We ran pink worms on a Jet Diver but the plugs sure did work for Dust.
