Headed upstream to try this gorgeous river that reportedly had salmon and steelhead.

I have previously tried to confirm their presence but to no avail.

Today the fall weather and the colors are amazing.

We arrive before the sun is above the ridges and get two hours in fishing a run that would make any steelheader drool.

It is flies only and two of us are firing away with a variety of skaters and streamers. Every cast I can imagine the big head rising out of the depths to take the fly.

Nice dream but no reality.

The golden glow as the sun came over the ridge was the religous.

We definitely achieved the zen of fishing but not the thrill of the catch. After 4 trips to the river, the absence of action is becoming a personal challenge.

Maybe the next time?

The Boys Chase Dust, Minimal Success

October 29th, 2007

Just a quick update that as I continue my rampage around the Pac NW with Lobey in search of something chrome, post Croatia, I remain goose-egged.

Lobey and I daisy-chained it across a very murky Sandy River, post Marmot blow-out, only to find a graveyard of dead, and half dead boots errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Silvers.

There was a little fat kid that had a snagging spot he was sitting down at and gigging dying, dark fish. Proceeding to ‘bonk’ said gigged, dark fish. All the while being fed cigarettes by his big, weird Greek buddy. Ahhh, the wonders of meat-hole Coho fishing.

We did run into Brent aka Magicsoul and his buddy, Paul. We sat and roundtabled the day before he and Brent went downriver to Brent’s ’spot’. We got word a little later, as we were on the way to see Gavin, that Brent got a couple………no idea on the shape of the fish.

Wilson, Trask Update

October 27th, 2007

Although Whalen nailed five below Sully’s on Tuesday, B Dog Lobey and I couldn’t find anything upriver today.
We moved up and down the Wilson between MM 5 and 18. Probably stopping at a dozen plus spots while only fishing four or five.

We ended up without any apparent real estate at Loren’s Drift on the Trask either. Bout twelve dudes there with no fish on the bank….saw one hooked and lost on bobber and roe. We found ourselves fishless but with bank under our feet just above Cedar Creek on the Trask.

We fished three different kinds of eggs both drifted and bobber-fished, as well as traditional drift rigs against steep, deep rock ledges. Nothing produced.

We weren’t alone with our lack luster results. I must have seen four or five rigs off and on all day on each different river. Everyone was hunting.

We had Tom and Lonnie with us today and they were initiated into our hectic river pace, full throttle. Kudos to both Tom and Lonnie for their good attitudes. There will be fish to come.

TOM BAXTER

We saw one chrome 22lb hen at what I reluctantly refer to as the Guide Shop. The main run below Mills is totally filled in and the only fishable water is directly below in the big boily hole that fishes about 4 guys, shoulder to shoulder.

There’s much work to do to learn this river again.

THIS JUST IN!!!

October 26th, 2007

My uncle just called me from the bank of the Trask.  He was watching his neighbor fish since he arrived at 7:30 and limited out by 9:30!  He had a 28lb hen and a 42 lb buck on the bank!!!  What a bastard to call me at the office and rub it in…  The other guy had missed 7 fish being inexperienced.  Bobber and eggs is the ticket.

Fishin’ High on The Wilson

October 26th, 2007

B dog and I will be fishing ‘high’ on the Wilson per our boy who nailed five. Stay tuned.

Nestucca Report

October 26th, 2007

Just a heads up that a guy got two Kings backbouncing eggs from the first bridge down. I’m trying to decide which river to hit. Leaning towards the Wilson from Mills down.

Doo Doo Brown

October 22nd, 2007

the water was that is.

It was chocolate milk.   I did manage to go 1 for 2 but both were boots.  Yet there were a couple chromers on the bank.

The river was almost not crossable – saw two kids fill their waders and turn back around.  I quickly realized that I owned every spot on the far side of the river and that paid off for me.

I worked as much water as I possibly could and found my best success straight across and down from the creak itself.  I think that the incoming creak water helped with visibility.

Hellcat those pictures sure tell the story of what it looked like down river.  It is too bad they were planning on holding off till the end of the month to break down the damn.  I guess you have to do what you have to do it just would have been nice if they had actually told someone ahead of time.  I guess there were a lot of guys that got stuck on the other side of the river when it all of a sudden came up – and turned doo doo brown.

It was good to get out and feel the tug on my line.
