Lack of money restricts anglers from making coast runs…

So by now everyone reading this story knows someone who is having more financial challenges then they’ve ever seen. By now most of you know someone who has lost their job(s) too. If you’re like me, you’re already unemployed for God’s sake. This does not bode well for trips all the way to the beach. In fact, being jobless yet unable to use the time to fish might be one of the most frustrating things ever….of all time…..hahaha
The way to stay safe….is to stay put. Obviously. Look at the last time we all made a run together……..it becomes pretty easy to see that our economy has affected our own pocket books so much, we have to fish locally. Who can afford to make runs to the coast anymore?
With this in mind, and even considering the recent staggering success (all odds considered) of Pigsticker and H2O at the coast…..I have been thinking about some of the new stuff we can do this Winter with our new success out of our driftboats on the CR. I mean, really, we should stoked about some of things I’ve been pondering…LR….how about our potential with plugs at the mouths of tributaries and such? When does DRANO happen etc? Things like this.
I know LR will be getting his drift boat all ready to float the coastal streams etc……but I am considering keeping mine “CR Ready”, just in case. If you think about a traditionally ‘long’ day trip….and what the costs are…..we can still take some of these types of trips….by saving and planning….Hell, just look at Sal can accomplish by saving….he’s fished EVERYWHERE!
My hope is that this post may get us all thinking, talking, sharing and even planning some close-to-home trips. Maybe this season just spoiled me….but the lesson seems timely. “Stay local, find success cheap.” I admit it. I’m not only broke, I’m jaded. LOFL. Cheers.
Sincerely,
The Job Hunting Fisherman and your very own Team Salmon Captain. Over and Freaking Out.

While I agree with you in principle Capt’n, I have to say that NOT including a coastal trip (or a few) this year would be detrimental to my mental well being. Last year I was unable to make the runs due to the birth or my son. This year my time is more finite with the needs of family, but I am bound and determined to hit the coastal tribs.
We can be frugal and responsible with these trips. I believe that if we plan ahead, carpool, make lunches, etc we can do this relativly painlessly. I am always down to drive and/or pull my boat. In fact it has been too long since the Hyde has seen the water so it’s time. I know other TS members have things that they can contirbute as well, be it eggs, gear or just their company. We should start posts to gather members together to maximize the journey. That said, it’s always nice to be fishing with your boys too.
So how about it? Lets throw out some dates and weekends that people can work with. Maybe even create a sign up sheet style reservation for seats available in trucks and boats? I’m down to chase something soon. Let’s get Team Salmon back in action…cost effectively.

Im with you on keepin it local.(Or should i say forced as well). Winter steel should be decent up on the Hood. Thats not excaclty close but closer than the coast. And your right, luckily we had a pretty good year so far, and it was all local. Weve tried the Sturgeon thing already here locally, although we fished when the water was high and filled with debris, that was fun.
One good thing is is that gas is the cheapest ive seen it in a long time, so maybe with some planning we can pool some money together and make at least a trip or two down to the coast here in the next month.
Anyway im down to brainstorm and come up with some good ideas in keeping our fishing adventures close to home.As well as trying to sneak in a coast trip or two.

Well you guy’s are in for a treat courtesy of the Lip Ripper…Are you ready for the great news? By all indications biologists are forcasting excellent runs of winter steel in our backyard rivers this year!!!! You heard me right fella’s…I’ve heard it from several credible sources. I will be at the coast this weekend if the water levels stay up for two reasons. There are plenty of nooks being caught the last two days and also a few early winter steelies have been bonked….I’ll be puttin out a few calls to see if you want to put your ass in the Drifter of Death!!!! FISH ON BABY…….

I understand where you are coming from bro, because I to am still broke and spending a lot of time at home with the kids. but I put 30 bucks in the v8 the other day and drove all over the coastal mountains then went to the kilches and caught some salmon and still made it back to ptown with a quarter tank. the price of salmon is more than the price of gas pound vs.gallon. I will carpool with anyone or pull a boat down if someone needs. the tundra is worthy. LR if you don’t have anyone in your boat sunday and need company give me a call. there could be some elk meat involved.
