H3llcat,

Today I had the opportunity to take a new guy fishing. He is my cousin whom I met for the first time in February this year, and his name is Chris Smith. A retired Marine of 10 years.

A fun fact about Chris is that he grew up in Alaska, worked on fish processors of troll caught fish, but he himself had never caught a King. WHAT? When I think of big king fishing, something that always comes to mind is Alaska. When he told me earlier this year that he wanted to catch a King, I felt a little warm under the collar and told him, we’ll try. Pressure was on.

As the middle of September was approaching I knew it was time. If you remember the memorable day of 9/11 last year, where not only you pooped in a bag, but countless anglers brought fish to their hand that day. I was hoping that today would be like that day.

So it was Chris, the infamous Craig, and myself. Launched the boat at approx 6:30am and headed to the spot. Much to my delight, there was no one there so I parked it in 35 FOW and we deployed Kwiks, and Hog Nose 5.5s. Sardine wrapped of coarse. After about an hour and 2 consumed Bananas with peels draped over our rods, Chris’ rod starts going boingo boingo.

Chinese fire drill happens, throw anchor, 10 minutes later fish is in the net. A beauty. 20+ lbs chromer. I was feeling really relieved and good at this point. About a half hour later it was my turn. The Hustler had a nice fish on the line, reeled up other rods, and right as we threw anchor, I found myself just reeling in my gear. Felt like a great fish, but is my luck would have it, I have the no nook curse for the year. Much to my surprise Craig went fishless which is usually not the case.

It was a great morning out on the water for our boat. A fish on the floor is never a bore. Oh, we didn’t see another fish caught all morning for about 30 boats in site. I guess I did something right today. Oh, and I’m pretty sure a new addict was born today.

Tight Lines and long live AAA,

Steve G aka “The Hustler”

Thanks for posting, H3l. It was fun taking a new guy and getting him into a nice fish like that. I must say though, he was wrapping plugs with the quickness by the end of the day. He’s got a knack for it, that’s for sure.
