Note from the founder…

“Although I never mention river names or locations…I still hope to win the respect and repeat viewership of not only the 10% of anglers that catch 90% of the fish but also from the rest of you too. How do you become part of the 10%? You read this website and pick up tips, tricks, suggestive language and hopefully a fishing partner or two. I can’t tell you where to go but I’m darn happy to show you how to do it. Or at least my interpretations.” Christopher Heller, Site Founder

TIP #1 “Stay on your toes”

Fish the water that is in front of you right now. Do not fish the water that was there last time you fished it. Chances are it’s changed and need re-evaluating. The All Around Anglers in the 10% have figured this out. Having a bit of everything in your box doesn’t just mean having different methods available. It also means you must have a variety of sizes and colors and even shapes within that gear set. It may sound very academic to you more seasoned anglers reading this but many people need a good reminder that rivers change constantly. They are like living, breathing creatures. Which is why I am addicted to them so much. They keep you guessing and readjusting and there is never a dull moment. One day you’re casting heavy slinkies and egg looped yarn balls and the next day you’re using little teeny black and red jigs and a split shot.

TIP #2 “Stay within a small color range”

Winter steelhead are so much more fun to fish for than summers. No comparison really. I suppose if you are a salmon-centric steelhead fisherman you will agree with this assessment as well. Their behavior is much more similar to that of a salmon than that of their summer cousins. They typically like deeper water which allows an angler to target more seam habitat and less tailout habitat. Which for me is excellent because of the methods I chose to use most often: Dead drifting yarn balls with chunks of eggs on top (tutorial to come soon), float fishing jigs, plastics and yarnies…and upriver drifting oblong style spoons. All of the methods are allowed when targeting your typical winter water. What you don’t want to do is go crazy with your colors. Stay within a small range of pinks and reds and keep it simple. Cerise, pink and white are your very best friends this time of year. I would rather fish an all-cerise yarnie over any other color, period. Coupla fresh berries from a skein tied into the top of the egg loop…money. Same with float fishing. Match your jigs to the water in front of you. Don’t use a big pink jig if you can see the bottom of the river. Go to black and red. Keep it simple with hardware as well. Go silver or brass and stay away from lots of colors on your hardware. Stay within a small range.

TIP #3 “Tip your jigs”

One of the most effective things a jig fisherman can do is tip his jig with a tiny piece of bait. The water conditions must be right and the piece of bait must be placed perfectly on the hook and must be an extension of the jig itself. Not a hook to hang bait off of. There is a fine line between the two. I discourage adding any scent to your jigs. Adding scent will muck the jig up and ruin the action in certain water. Whereas tipping your jig with a small can enhance the effect when done properly. The best type of bait to use is shrimp. There are many variations of ways to do this so I’ll let you come up with your own. In most cases you must use something extremely small…so I will say to keep that in mind. You’ll also want to either cure or scent or both….the shrimp itself. Again, many ways to accomplish this so experiment away. But I promise you…it can drastically change your results from one cast to the next for winter steelhead.

Dually noted. Gonna pick up some splitshot and some dinks for sure. Darker jig colors as well.

    Thank you,

Of course cerise is about the only color of yarn I don’t have. You’re an evil man Heller.

When you say “upriver drifting spoons”, do you mean casting upriver of the water you intend to fish and dead drifting the spoon until you get to the swing?

You act like I’m Lex Luther. 🙂

And yes….most of the time we’ll be ‘drifting’ spoons versus the cast and retrieve stuff that’s been working for the silvers.

You’ve gotta get back to that river with us. It’s finally back in.

Reed…just got information from two people that were down there fishing today. Seems like the flood might’ve messed things up pretty good. Water level was good but no fish anywhere. They ended up with one fish and they had to go upriver to water I haven’t been to to get it.

I’ve got two buddies with me on Saturday for a trip that’s been planned for a while. They’re mostly fly guys so if we don’t end up doing that coastal program we may stay local for steelhead. Let me keep you posted as to whether it would be worth the run for you or not.

No worries dude. If not this weekend, let’s do it soon! I’m trying to work in a trip down to the south coast in the next few weeks if we can get some rain in the forecast. Other than that, I’m pretty open for December.

    Word.

Thank you for the tips. This is why I love your website. Most people are very tight-lipped about their tactics, but you are always sending tips and suggestions out to anyone who checks out your website. I can only imagine that there are many people that look at this site on a regular basis that have never left a comment or anything that would let you know who they are or how they like this site, while I cant speak for anyone but myself, I would hope that they would start to participate more.

  9. Hellcat says:

David you’ve taken some time to comment here and that’s what it’s all about. When I see a new angler participating in this labor of love of mine I get as excited as a kid on Christmas morning. I see the analytics so I know only about 1percent of readers actually comment. I guess you could compare it to a radio talk show. Not many people call in but a lot listen. I’m trying to help anglers as much as I can without disclosing river names or locations. I have always hoped that allows me the respect among my peers while inspiring newer anglers the ability to become more productive with their time on the water. I get excited when people catch fish. Period. When done the correct way…helping people accomplish this doesn’t have to be a dirty thing. Glad you came by today. Much respect. Do it again anytime.

Tried all that today. Tough day on southern Oregon river. Gin clear low streams and wrong tides. Still fun though to fish new river.

  11. Hellcat says:

Hey I’m proud of ya anyhow, Donaca. Keep after it.

Man I have just recently found your site but, have been watching you videos on youtube since I started being a serious steelheader back in Oct and Thanks to guys like you I was able to accomplish my first steelhead at the beginning of the month. I’m the black sheep of my family only outdoors men and damn proud of it! I did’nt have a grandpa or father to teach me when I was young and found grandpas old pole covered in dust in he barn.(taught my dad how to fish when I was 15) That when it all began unfortunatly my home river hasnt produce for me yet soon though.

JUST WANTED TO GIVE YOU A BIG THANK YOU AND WITHOUT SOME OF YOUR TIPS AND TRICKS I WOULDNT BE AS GOOD OF AN ANGLER. I’m an average angler with an above average determination

  16. Hellcat says:
